A.1 Identification of targeted project’s areas and selection of pilot sub-basins – Gaining local support in the targeted project’s areas
Responsible Beneficiary: IOTSP
The action includes the following activities:

  • Collection and evaluation of generic data about the areas of Platanias and Agios Nikolaos (Mirabello) Municipalities in Crete, Greece and Metapontino in Basilicata, Italy in order to select the project pilot areas (river sub-basins).
  • Organization of meetings with farmers, agriculturalists and local competent authorities on water management issues and communication of the project’s actions and objectives.
  • Registration of volunteering farmers and farms located in the project pilot areas that will participate in project implementation.

A.2 Water Resilient Agriculture by means of the EWS standard.
Responsible Beneficiary: RodaxAgro
This action concerns the development of an Agricultural Water Management System (AWMS) based on the requirements of EWS standard and includes the following:
  • Identification and adjustment of EWS requirements to the Agricultural sector (AWMS requirements).
  • Analysis of the readiness of the Agricultural Sector to conform to AWMS requirements.
  • Defining the specific tools and mechanisms required for the implementation of AWMS.
  • Preparation of the implementation guide.

D.1 Good agricultural practices monitoring in the pilot farms
Responsible Beneficiary: UNIBAS
The action concerns monitoring the application of good agricultural practices on the field for a 3 year period and includes:

  • Data logging of water and agrochemicals utilized and productivity reached, by the farmers.
  • Leaf, soil and water run-offs sampling and analyses and soil moisture measurements by FOrs agriculturalists and
  • Data quality control.

D.2 Project’s environmental impact
Responsible Beneficiary: UNIBAS
The action concerns the environmental impact assessment of the project proposed good agricultural practices on the farm and the pilot area scales per year of application and includes:
  • 1. Estimation of the project’s agricultural practices’ performance indicators.
  • 2. Environmental impact assessment on the farm scale.
  • 3. Projection on the pilot area (sub-basin) scale.
  • 4. Environmental impact on the pilot area (sub-basin) scale.
  • 5. Effects of the project’s agricultural practices on water use efficiency for the 3 implementation years.

D.3 Project’s socio-economic impact
Responsible Beneficiary: HYETOS
The action concerns the socio-economic impact assessment of a) the project proposed good agricultural practices on the farm and the pilot area scales and b) the water governance actions on the FOrs scale. It includes:
1. socio-economic impacts on the farm scale based on actions D.1 and D.2 monitoring parameters.
2. socio-economic impacts on the cultivation scale by means of data projection on the total area cultivated with the same crops in each pilot.
3. socio- economic impact of FOrs governance actions with respect to the climate change adaptive capacity of farmers built.
4. socio-economic impacts on the pilot areas scale via the estimation of water opportunity cost and renewable water availability.

D.4 Assessment of ecosystem function restoration
Responsible Beneficiary: IOTSP
The action concerns the assessment of the project proposed agricultural practices impacts on the ecosystem functions at the farm scale and includes:
1. Biodiversity of soil microorganisms measurements via traditional and molecular methods before the onset and after the completion of application of the proposed practices.
2. Recording of orchard ground flora composition before the onset and after the completion of application of the proposed practices.
3. Recording the number and taxonomic distribution of arthropod fauna before the onset and after the completion of application of the proposed practices.
The action also involves the desertification risk assessment of the 3 pilot areas by means of GIS modelling.

D.5 Evaluation of project’s results
Responsible Beneficiary: HYETOS
This action concerns the evaluation of project’s results, their transferability and replicability, as well as their potential incorporation in the national water management, agricultural development and climate change adaptation policies and strategies by the project’s main stakeholders. It includes
  • The definition of the main stakeholders.
  • The development of appropriate evaluation tools.
  • Evaluation by the main stakeholders and estimation of project’s performance indicators.

E.1 Project’s promotional material and general publicity
